The Economic and Global Impact of the IPL

by Akshara Dalan‍ ‍

“In the air…taken.”

The aftermath of those words exists somewhere on a spectrum between incomparable joy and crippling grief as thousands of fans clad in brightly coloured jerseys erupt in the emotion that has long-shaped the Indian Premier League’s success. But it isn’t emotion alone that has laid the foundation for the world’s richest cricket league— it is also pragmatic economics.

Established in 2008 by the Board of Control of Cricket in India, the IPL has transcended the boundaries of a sporting event to epitomise almost mythic proportions: attracting international players, reaching global audiences, and securing multi-billion dollar broadcasting and sponsorship deals. The monumental economic impact of this league affects nearly every sphere of the country’s economy— from creating jobs to boosting the digital economy and technology. In its opening season alone, it generated a revenue of 645 crore rupees, with its surplus figures rising to a staggering 5120 crore rupees in 2023.

This large revenue is an amalgamation of media rights, sponsorships, ticket sales and franchise fees. IPL’s business model relies on revenue sharing between BCCI, franchises, and players. Media Rights and Sponsorships comprise 70-80% of the IPL revenue and are known as the central pool. The BCCI retains around 50% of the central revenue pool, while the remaining 45% is distributed among the franchises and the other 5% is allocated to the winning teams as prize money.

  • Media rights: In 2022, Reliance Jio TV bagged the global media rights for IPL for a massive INR 23,800 crore (INR 200 crores higher than what Disney Hotstar paid for exclusive rights earlier), covering the period of 2023-2027.

  • Sponsorships: Tata is the main title sponsor of the IPL,  shelling out around INR 670 crores for two years. The previous title sponsor, Vivo, had also paid INR 454 crores to terminate its title sponsorship. That adds up to a whopping INR 1124 crore revenue for BCCI. Other major sponsors include Paytm, Coca-Cola, and Tata Motors, contributing significantly to the revenue.

  • Franchise fees: The eight franchises pay an annual fee to BCCI, totalling INR 17,911 crores for ten years. This includes the latest team additions, Ahmedabad and Lucknow, who paid a whopping INR 5,500 crores and INR 7090 crores, respectively.

The IPL’s international impact is monumental, primarily because it bridges the gap between domestic and international cricket. Firstly, it provides financial security for various international cricketers, especially those who play for countries which offer relatively modest remuneration, therefore making the IPL an attractive proposition for those seeking financial stability. Additionally, the IPL serves as an impactful catalyst for the international tourism industry. According to the Economic Times, hotels report a 20–30% uplift in average daily rates (ADR) during IPL windows. The IPL doesn’t only empower players from Tier 2 or Tier 3 cities but also empowers the cities themselves by inviting economic growth. Data from the Economic Times states that homestay platforms and local guesthouses witnessed 2 to 3x spikes during match weeks. These benefits extend to the international community with Etihad, a sponsor of the Chennai Super Kings, who called the IPL a “remarkable vehicle for [them] to engage with Indian consumers at scale.”

In a nutshell, the IPL isn’t limited to the confines of a “sporting event,” it has rather pushed the boundaries of what is defined as one (perhaps with countless sixes). By skilfully combining fans’ undying passion for the sport with financial pragmatism and cultural value, the IPL has reeled in not just billions in revenue, but also the hearts of innumerable fans all over the world!
